Project Information

Who can request a project?

-Anyone who is not a registered student at Virginia Tech and is within a 20 minute drive of Virginia Tech's campus.

What happens after I request a project?

-Project requests are just the start of The Big Event process. Within a few weeks will we contact each project site to schedule a project site check. A project site check must be completed in order for your project to be accepted. After your project is checked for safety and volunteer and tool numbers, you will be matched with one of our volunteer teams and your project will be completed April 17th, 2010!

What types of projects can Big Event Volunteers complete?

-Our volunteers can complete many different types of projects. Some examples of past work include: raking leaves, painting, simple yard work, inside/outside cleaning, and minor carpentry. Most likely if you have a project, we can provide you with volunteers. It is important to remember, however, that our volunteers are generally unskilled workers and they are not permitted to use power tools for projects.

What tools and supplies can The Big Event provide?

-The Big Event can provide many everyday tools and supplies for your project. If you have a special need please feel free to contact us at bigevent@vt.edu and we will do our best to assist you.

***IMPORTANT NOTE: The Big Event 2010 will not be offering paint. We will continue to provide paint brushes, rollers and trays.


How long should the project last?

-Big Event projects last no longer than 4 hours.

How many volunteers can I request?

-As many as you need! The beauty of The Big Event is that we will take on any project, whether its really small or extremely big!


What about community organizations?

-The Big Event accepts projects from local residents as well as community organizations. If you would like to request a project for a local school, church, NPO or other organization, please check out our community partners program.


What about local businesses?

-The Big Event will accept exterior cleanup projects such as graffiti removal on a case by case basis. Please submit business requests through our community partners program.
