Why I am involved in The Big Event:

Throughout my time at Virginia Tech, service has become a more and more significant part of my life. The Big Event is an opportunity for all members of the Tech community to give back without any strings attached and I love that it has become a part of our Universities culture. This year will mark the fifth Big Event I have been able to attend, throughout that time I have had the opportunity to watch it grow into the amazing day it is now. The impact that this event has is truly special and I am honored to be involved. I hope to keep our strong tadition of service going by making The Big Event 2010 the best ever.

Aimee Stright, Director of Project Evaluation

Year: Junior

Major(s): Psychology and Sociology

Hometown: Warrenton, VA

Why I am involved in the Big Event:

I love doing community service and seeing that what one person does can actually make a difference. The Big Event is an amazing example of this, as so many people give their time to help out members of the surrounding community to say thank you. My freshman year, as a volunteer, I saw what a difference a single person could make and it inspired me to take a more active role in the actual organization of the Big Event, first as a committee member and now as a member of the executive council. The Big Event is going to be bigger than ever this year, not only reaching out to those in the community, but also giving the students the opportunity to practice Ut Prosim, the universities motto.

Major(s):

Hometown: Charlotte, NC

Why I am involved in The Big Event:

Service has always held a significant role in my life and is something that I have actively been a part of for many years. Upon coming to Virginia Tech I was looking for a way that I could fulfill our school’s motto “Ut Prosim – That I May Serve” and found The Big Event to be the perfect outlet for this. The Big Event is the best way for me to say thank you to the community surrounding Virginia Tech for providing me a home throughout the school year and for their continuous support of our students and university. With the small town atmosphere that surrounds Virginia Tech, the community is a huge part of our college experience. This community has been my home for almost four years now and I can’t think of anything more gratifying than giving back to the community that has given me so much.
