Our Mission Statement

The Big Event at Virginia Tech is a student-run community service effort that has grown into the 2nd largest event of its kind in the nation. Every spring, thousands of students, faculty, and staff come together to complete hundreds of community service projects throughout Blacksburg, Christiansburg and the New River Valley.

Projects are completed regardless of need or socioeconomic status; instead, it is The Big Event’s goal to simply say, “Thank you.” Seeded in our university’s motto of Ut Prosim (That I may serve) students and community members come together for a truly unparalleled experience. The Big Event: “One Big Day. One Big Thanks.”

NO POWER TOOLS ARE ALLOWED!
Please give an estimate of how many volunteers you will need. We will confirm this number during project checks and then assign based on availability.
If you are able to provide all of the tools needed for volunteers, select 'YES'. If you would like to request tools from The Big Event, select 'NO'. We will discuss during the project check any tools that we have available.
Agreement I understand The Big Event is a one-day volunteer service project occurring on April 11, 2015. The Big Event is expected to last no more than 4 hours, and due to these time constraints, the requested project may not be finished. In case of inclement weather on the day of The Big Event, I understand that The Big Event Committee cannot guarantee the completion of the requested project. I understand that all jobs that are able to be performed will be, but due to insurance constraints, The Big Event is unable to reschedule any projects for a later date. I understand that only the projects listed on the Project Site Checklist Form will be completed, and under no circumstances are the participants allowed to use power tools (this includes but is not limited to lawnmowers, weed eaters, electric shears, etc.). If painting is requested, I understand The Big Event will not provide paint, and the participants are not expected to scrape and paint the day of The Big Event. I understand that The Big Event Committee reserves all rights to terminate any project at any time for any reason without prior notice.

The Big Event Committee, Virginia Tech and the Commonwealth of Virginia are not responsible for any damages caused by volunteers. Participants shall protect, hold harmless, and indemnify The Big Event Committee, Virginia Tech and the Commonwealth of Virginia against all liabilities, claims, suits, or demands for injuries or damages to any person and/or property growing out of his/her participation in The Big Event, including acts or omissions constituting negligence by The Big Event Committee, Virginia Tech and the Commonwealth of Virginia, or individual volunteers. I certify that I am a resident of Southwest Virginia, and that I am not a student of Virginia Tech.

I certify that I am the owner or have obtained approval from the owner of the project site concerning the above requested improvements. I understand this is only a job request, and all job requests must be approved by The Big Event Committee. Upon approval, I will be contacted by The Big Event to schedule a meeting time for job approval.
